The French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was the architect of the Statue of Liberty, with the help of Gustav Eiffel, and the support of a group of French liberals who promoted the United States as a model of a well-organized and stable government. The statue was then considered the tallest building in New York City.

Over the years, the torch underwent many modifications. In 1916 it was converted into electrical power and redesigned in the mid-1980s when the statue was repaired by French and American workers to commemorate the centennial of the statue in July 1986.
The Statue of Liberty was added in 1984 to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
